Today was a very relaxing day. In the late morning we went on a drive through the Lake District. This is a very scenic area of low grassy mountains and long glacial lakes. Hiking is very popular in the Lake District. Hikes range from climbing the mountains using accessible trails to leisurely walks around the lakes or along the roadside.
The roads are amazing. In many places they are only the width of a car. When the trees provide a canopy, it is like you’re travelling down a dark meandering green tunnel. It is not a problem when two cars meet. There are ample spaces to move and let the other car pass.
We finished our drive with a stop in the market town of
Keswick. It was full of tourist, like ourselves, looking for local handicrafts.
In the evening, we went to the dog races. This was a very different type of race as the dogs run cross country, over fences and through sheep pastures. The race can range from 6 miles to 10 miles. A few of the people there had very thick Cumbrian accents. To my ears they could have been speaking Martian.
