Edinburgh is Scotland's second-most populous city, behind Glasgow, and the seventh-most populous city in the United Kingdom. It is found on the Firth of Fourth. Recognised as the capital of Scotland since at least the 15th century, Edinburgh is the seat of the Scottish Government. The city's Palace of Holyrood is the official residence of the British monarchy while in Scotland.
The legend of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was based on Deacon
Brody, a common criminal in Edinburgh. Many of the landmarks are also the
fictional locations for Harry Potter.
I love the architecture of the old city. Each block has a fantastic
and majestic building.
We visited Edinburgh Castle, which is located on high hill overlooking the city and the harbour. It has been occupied since the Iron Age. There has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until 1633, when Cromwell occupied the castle. The British army still has barracks found with the castle.
Within the castle, there is a military museum, a war memorial and the royal banquet hall. There is a small chapel, where the society of Margarets meet. Most impressive is the room with the Scottish royal jewels.
The road leading down from the castle is known as the Royal Mile. It is lined with many splendor buildings with many lanes that lead to hidden treasures. We had a walking tour, which was a sad joke. The guide basically just recited a bunch of facts and dates, with no theme. It didn’t help that his accent was so thick, it hard to understand him.
We went to a restaurant called Hawksmore for dinner. It was one of the better meals that we have during this vacation.
